NIU SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Aerospace Design is a student organization within the NIU College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (CEET). The organization is comprised of engineering students from all disciplines. Each year the team uses classroom theory and research to design and build a plane for a national competition. Team members learn important skills such as project management, experimentation techniques, budgeting, and technical reporting. Team members are also taught how to use a laser cutter, wind tunnel, and various simple manufacturing techniques.
NIU SAE Aerospace Design is dedicated to competing in the Aero-Design section of the SAE Collegiate Design Series. The team will compete in the regular class division, which is a heavy lift competition. Aspects of the competition include a payload, design, and technical presentation. This competition provides the team members the opportunity to experience the aerospace design world and to network with professional from the aerospace industry.
Besides competition, the team also participates in events to promote engineering.
The NIU SAE teams present to the new engineering students every year in order to encourage students to join
organizations to help create well-rounded engineers with actual hands-on experience. The Aerospace Design
team attends NIU STEMfest every year to give back to the community by teaching children and visitors a little about Aerospace Engingeering and also encouraging them to explore all the exciting opportunities in STEM careers. Our members find it very important to give back to the community, which is why our members work with local schools to teach younger generations about engineering and volunteer at various events to give back to the community.
